Steingarten Sunset Walk

5pm – 8.30pm Monday-Sunday

Join Walk Local on this three and a half hour walk, with wine and local fare as you watch the sun go down over the Barossa Valley.

Surrounded by rolling hills we walk along a lovely trail which is part of the Mawson Trail and runs along the ridge of the Barossa Ranges, with Eden Valley to the East and the Barossa Valley to West.  We pass a beautiful stone wall and to the right, a steep vineyard – the famous Steingarten Vineyard. The Steingarten (stone garden) vineyard was established in 1962 by Colin Gramp from Orlando Wines. It was planted with Riesling with the aim of growing grapes under similar conditions to those found in the steep Mittel Mosel region of Germany. The Steingarten vineyard faces east towards the Eden Valley.  Before planting the grapevines, the vineyard soil was ‘deep ripped’ which bought underlying rocks to the surface. Larger pieces of rock were broken up by hand and these pieces became the stony surface layer you now see.

After viewing the vineyard, head over to the

8km walk is on gently undulating gravel trails down to the valley floor passing local vineyards and winding our way back up following the fenceline of rich farmland, with kangaroos often hopping along in front of us, back to our viewing platforms.  Here we watch the sun go down over the valley from the lookout that faces west overlooking the Barossa Valley. Here you can see the length of the valley, from Lyndoch in the South through to Stockwell in the North.  On the horizon to the South-West you can sometimes see the faint blue waters of the Spencer Gulf.  Her we enjoying local wines and a tasting platter of fruit, cheeses, locally made fare and Barossa produce.  Even a homemade cake for dessert.

This is our most popular walk and you get the best of the Barossa in the wide open spaces with wonderful food.

We did the Steingarten Walk with two good friends and were joined by another three walkers under the expert guidance of Carolyn Travers. She is a fantastic guide and she brought along a picnic feast that was quite stunning.

Great scenery. Lovely picnic. Fabulous host. We will do it again.
