Barossa Valley – Greenock Food & Wine lovers walk

9am to 5pm Tanunda – Murray Street, (meet in front of Barossa Visitors Centre)

Join Walk Local on this one day 13km walk starting in Tanunda where we join the Tanunda Heritage Walk through this beautiful village viewing historic photos and tales of the early days of the Barossa offering a rare insight into a unique part of Australia.

We join the Heysen Trail which follows gently undulating back roads and tracks with views of the Barossa, passing vineyards, wineries, historical nineteenth-century buildings and natural bushland.

We stop en-route at the fabulous Whistler Wines.  Their award winning Cellar Door is set in virgin Australian scrub, along the iconic Seppeltsfield Road, yet tucked away from the day to day world and is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a tasting and morning tea.

At Whistler you will try a range of minimal intervention wines made from grapes grown here on the property, using Organic & Biodynamic practices.

While Shiraz is king in the Barossa, and with nearly half our vineyard planted to Shiraz it is certainly a focus at Whistler, we also showcase several varietals in our 3 ranges of wines. The more classic Estate and Reserve ranges reflect traditional, bolder Barossan styles with cellaring in mind, whereas our fun and funky Next Gen Range provides lighter, drink now wines.

Leaving Whistler the trail follows vineyards and farmlands crossing a creek lined with gum trees before arriving in Greenock.

We have traditional pub lunch at the recently revamped Greenock Creek Hotel, or known by locals as ‘The Greenock’ is the centre point of the town for locals and tourists alike catching up for a few drinks and a meal! Proudly family-owned and managed by Chris and Amanda Adams, strive to involve the local community and produce in every aspect of the hotel and also provide a warm and wholesome experience for guests.

Our second wine tasting for the day is at the wonderful Kalleske Wines.

In South Australia’s Barossa Valley, the Kalleske family have been farming and growing grapes since 1853 near the village of Greenock. They are one of the region’s leading grape-growing families consistently growing some of the Barossa’s best quality grapes. After six generations of growing grapes, winemaker and seventh generation family member, Troy Kalleske, together with his brother Tony, established the Kalleske winery and made the first ‘Kalleske’ wine. The winery is situated on the family estate where traditional winemaking techniques ensure the vineyard realises its full potential as wine.

The vineyard is managed by Troy’s and Tony’s parents, John and Lorraine, and brother, Kym. John has over forty years experience tending the vineyard. The 120 acre vineyard is planted to Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Mataro, Petit Verdot, Durif, Viognier, Tempranillo and Zinfandel. Vines vary in age with the oldest remaining vineyard dating back to 1875 and an overall average vine age of about 50 years. The vineyard is low yielding with grapes grown organically and biodynamically and the winery is also certified biodynamic/organic.

The Kalleske family are active practitioners of sustainable farming. They are caretakers of the land and not only want to maintain the environment but improve it for future generations.

All Kalleske wines are estate grown and vinified with minimalist winemaking techniques used to fully capture the essence of the vineyard allowing genuine handmade estate wines to be produced. The range is a diverse mix of wines that showcases the splendid Kalleske grapes.

Since the first wine release in 2004, Kalleske has rapidly gained a reputation for producing top-quality hand crafted wines. Kalleske are committed to continue making genuine estate grown wines of individuality and of vineyard and winemaking excellence.

Wines from Kalleske have been seven generations in the making, but they are certainly worth the wait!
Our final destination for the afternoon is a wine tasting at Murray Street Vineyards, a short walking distance from the town centre, a stone winery and tasting room signage appears.

It is here visitors have come for over a decade to be seated on a vine-covered veranda and be treated to some of the finest wines produced in the Barossa Valley. Following its founding in 2002, it did not take long for Murray Street’s tasting room to establish a reputation as a favourite destination and its wines to be rewarded with five-stars by revered wine critic James Halliday.

The French rightfully point to vineyard soils and climate in explaining the greatness and differentiation of their wines. Murray Street’s Greenock Estate sits in the Barossa Valley’s Western Ridge hosting a tapestry of some of the oldest soils in the world with a reputation for producing the most intensely flavoured grapes among the Barossa Valley’s sub-regions.

Our Estate vineyards host over 300 acres of hillside vines producing outstanding Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Mataro grapes. At the top of the hill sits our five peaked Chateau, where grapes are crushed and then fermented in one of 34 open-air, temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks; thus, beginning the process of making small-batch Barossan artisan wine.
